Case Study
Conveyor Pallet Storage System - Newport
Duration: 28th September 2009 - 5th January 2010
Mechtek were awarded a contract by a client in Wales to design, manufacture and install a sizeable gravity conveyor pallet storage system. This was to fit inside a new extended warehouse facility for the purpose of storing heavy duty (1000kg) load pallets.
The final design to be commissioned and assembled involved 14 lanes of 3-tiered pallet capacity or 42 channels capable of holding 714 pallet spaces. This involved using a twin cylinder designed pneumatic pallet separator at the front of each lane. Altogether nearly 4,000 heavy duty gravity rollers and 675 internal break cartridge rollers were used in the installation.
Mechtek's assembly involved bolting the structure together in modular form in nearby premises once the manufacture was complete. The design had to be made high impact resistant to counter the continual use of forklifts once in operation, this included frame protectors on each lane. Pallet height restrictors were designed into the structure with infeed mirror systems for pallet alignment. The system was finally powder coated and given a high quality finish before transfer to the client's site.
Project Engineer Tony Cook managed the eight men assembly and installation team. "We and the customer were very pleased with the final completion. We were down to install the conveyor system on site over three weeks but managed it in just two, which was especially good due to it being planned originally over the Christmas period".
